My Least Favorite Word is Normal

This might sound crazy but the word which drives me crazy in session is the word “normal”. I have clients tell me it’s not “normal” to feel how they are feeling. Others tell me they aren’t “normal” for the way they behave. This statement inspires me to explore with them the following - What is normal? When I ask clients this question, they often stare at me very perplexed.

In my opinion, normal doesn’t exist. A situation which I see as completely “normal” might shock you and be the most bizarre situation you’ve seen all day! We as a society have become obsessed with fitting everything into boxes. Normal is one of those boxes. I want to know who created the box for normal (seriously if you know comment below). Are the things we’ve deemed “normal” really what we want in life? If you answered yes then that’s amazing. If you answered no break that “normal” box and explore! To me, “normal” is just an excuse for us to reject ideas easily when we respond by saying, “that’s not normal”.

There is beauty in the fact that there is only one you in the world. When we use the word normal we set ourselves in a box. We don’t allow ourselves to explore who we are. We fit ourselves into the “normal” box that society has created for us. I say that you should explore the new opportunities. So I challenge you to stop being normal. Be extraordinary. After all, there is only one you and that’s what makes you unique, special, and loved by others.
