My Favorite Coping Mechanism

Early on in college I realized what an impact exercise had on my mental health. It was never a component of my life prior to college where I met one of my favorite people ever (Love you @iam_kimevans). She would educate me on the undeniable benefits of exercise in life. Exercise is something I preach to all my clients. Especially those who are struggling with anxiety and/or depression.

Why do I preach incorporating exercise to clients? For starters, I have noticed such a massive difference when I exercise in my own life but let’s talk about the science out there. When we exercise, we have a change in the levels of, serotonin, stress hormones, and endorphins in our brain. Why are these chemicals important? Serotonin is what we often refer to as the “happy chemical”. This is a chemical often in anxiety and depression medications. Exercise is a natural process to increase our serotonin. Endorphins are a natural painkiller which we need to combat stress.

Exercise can improve coping, increase our self-esteem, and our ability to regulate self-control. When exercising in an amazing community (shoutout to @spoonmoonuptown for creating the best I have seen) you have the opportunity to socialize and interact with a group who can uplift and encourage you each day.

So, with all that being said what can you do in your day to day? There is no magical answer for everyone. Start out small with a walk around the neighborhood. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous or hours long to experience the benefits for your mental health. Just make an effort to move your body each day!
